Do you regularly break out in a cold sweat when it is time to come in for a dental cleaning? If so, you should not be surprised to discover that you are in good company as 30 million to 40 million Americans experience fear or anxiety when visiting their dentist.

The good news is, Dr. Douglas Hauck and our team have plenty of experience helping patients overcome their dental anxiety. And while people often use the terms dental anxiety and dental phobia interchangeably, please note that they aren’t actually the same thing.

-1 Dental Anxiety: folks experiencing general dental anxiety may feel an underlying sense of uneasiness before they come into the office for treatment. With dental anxiety, it is not unusual to have exaggerated worries about the impending procedure. Unfortunately for the patient, this can make their time in the chair unnecessarily stressful.

-2 Dental Phobia: so if you are one of the unfortunate people who experiences dental phobia, the anxiety is heightened. In fact, your intense dread may leave you feeling panicked. Patients experiencing this level of fear often delay needed treatment as well as routine maintenance which actively prevents gum disease and tooth decay. If you are letting dental phobia control your smile care, your oral health and self-esteem will suffer.

Whether you have trouble sleeping the night before a procedure or whether you find yourself having a hard time breathing whenever your dental team works on you, please let our team know beforehand. We won’t judge you, conversely, we will work with you to help you experience a sense of control over what happens while you are with us.
