At Douglas Hauck DDS, Inc., we know that achieving a beautiful, healthy smile for life requires more than just care from Dr. Douglas Hauck. In between visits to our office, it is essential to maintain a good oral hygiene routine at home. This includes brushing and flossing every day. To help you more effectively brush and floss, we are happy to educate our patients about dental hygiene in Newport Beach, California.

Brushing

First, you have to start with the right equipment. Pick a toothbrush that has soft bristles and a small head to brush your teeth. It is also important to use fluoride toothpaste. Place a small strip of the toothpaste on the toothbrush and brush in small, circular motions. This helps to remove food particles that are stuck under the gum line. Brush at an angle, slowly and carefully, to cover all the surfaces of each tooth and the spaces in between the teeth. Brush for several minutes to thoroughly clean your teeth. For optimal results, brush at least twice every day, but preferably after every meal.

Flossing

Dental floss is perfect for removing plaque and food particles from the areas between the teeth. Flossing every day is essential for your overall oral health. To floss properly, take roughly 18 inches of dental floss and wrap it around the two index fingers. Continue wrapping until there is only an inch or two available. Reach between the teeth in a C-shaped movement, making sure to get both sides, to remove any debris and plaque. Do this for each tooth.

We recommend flossing at night, before you go to bed, for the best results. When you first start flossing, you may experience some bleeding in the gums. This is normal and should go away after you have flossed a couple of times. If the bleeding does not go away, call our dental office and schedule an appointment with our dentist.

We would love to help you learn more about flossing and brushing properly when you visit. Call Douglas Hauck DDS, Inc. today to schedule your preventive dentistry consultation!
