According to the American Cancer Society, over 30,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed every year. Unfortunately, it is estimated that over 7,000 of these cases will result in death. At Douglas Hauck DDS, Inc., we provide annual oral cancer exams to catch oral cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.
Oral cancer, a pathologic process, begins with an asymptomatic stage. During this stage, the usual signs of cancer may not be readily noticeable. Because there are often no symptoms in the initial stage of oral cancer, oral cancer examinations by Dr. Douglas Hauck are crucial. While oral cancers can be of varied histologic types, including melanoma, teratoma, and adenocarcinoma, the most common or frequent type of oral cancer is malignant squamous cell carcinoma. Malignant squamous cell carcinoma usually begins in mouth and lip tissues.
Oral cancers commonly occur in several oral and maxillofacial areas, including the:
- Salivary glands
- Oropharyngeal region (throat)
Why Should I Have an Oral Cancer Exam?
Nearly 75 percent of oral cancer cases are linked with changeable behaviors including tobacco use, smoking, and excessive consumption of alcohol. If you desire, Dr. Douglas Hauck can help you learn more about the benefits of changing these habits to improve your oral and overall health.
When oral cancer is detected and diagnosed in its earliest stages, treatment can be very effective in most cases. If you notice any changes or abnormalities in your mouth, gums, tongue, or any of the surrounding areas, schedule an appointment with Dr. Douglas Hauck as soon as possible. During the oral cancer exam, Dr. Douglas Hauck and our hygienists will carefully screen your face and the surrounding areas for any signs of pathologic changes.
When you are screened for oral cancer in Newport Beach, California, Dr. Douglas Hauck will investigate any present of the following:
- Red patches and sores
- Leukoplakia (hard white or gray lesions)
Oral Cancer Exams, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Dr. Douglas Hauck and our dental team perform completely pain-free oral can exams. As part of the visual part of the exam, Dr. Douglas Hauck will look at and feel your face, neck, and glands for any abnormal bumps. If any lesions, abnormalities, lump, or leukoplakia are present, our dentist will create a diagnostic impression of your mouth and come up with an effective treatment plan. If the initial treatment plan does not produce the desired results, Dr. Douglas Hauck will perform a biopsy of the area in question. As part of the biopsy, we will perform a clinical evaluation that will identify the precise grade and stage of the oral lesion.
When the basement membrane of the epithelium has been broken, oral cancer is deemed present. In some cases, malignant types of oral cancer spread readily to other places in the oral and maxillofacial regions, posing additional threats to your overall health. Depending on your individual diagnosis, your treatment could include radiation therapy, excision, and/or chemotherapy.
