Periodontics

Healthy gums are critical to retaining our natural teeth lifelong. The primary functions of gums are to hold the teeth in place and protect the roots and other supporting structures from external harm. Gum health can also impact your general well-being, and severe gum diseases can contribute to chronic health conditions. At Rollolazo Dental Studio in Newport Beach, California, we provide various periodontal treatments to keep your gums pink and healthy.

What Is Periodontics?

Periodontics focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum and jawbone disorders. By keeping your gums healthy, we will ensure that your teeth remain firmly in position. Most of the periodontal therapies concentrate on gingivitis and periodontitis. These inflammatory conditions affect the gums and gradually destroy the gum tissues. In addition, periodontics can also involve other oral tissues.

Periodontal Treatments at Rollolazo Dental Studio

  • Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a standard surgical treatment for periodontal disease. It involves reshaping the gum line by cutting away any infected tissue. And as a result, more of the tooth enamel is exposed during this procedure. It is also recommended as a cosmetic treatment for patients having gummy smiles.

  • Soft-Tissue Graft

Gum recession is a symptom of gum disorders. As the gums recede, more of the tooth roots are exposed. This can make teeth appear longer besides increasing teeth sensitivity to hot or cold foods. It also makes the tooth more vulnerable to damage from gum infections. During a soft-tissue graft procedure, some tissue is taken from the top of your mouth or another source and grafted to the gum area. This helps cover the roots and restores the gum line to its previous, healthy state.

  • Ridge Modification

Ridge modification addresses abnormalities in the upper and lower jaws. These abnormalities can occur due to periodontal disease, injury, trauma, wearing dentures, or developmental problems. Such defects can leave inadequate bone for dental implant placement, causing an unattractive indentation in the jawline, adjoining the missing teeth.

During the ridge modification surgery, the gum is lifted away from the ridge to expose the bone defect fully. This defect is filled with bone graft material which helps regenerate lost bone. Ridge modification improves the cosmetic appearance, functionality of the mouth and ensures the success of dental implants.

  • Sinus Augmentation

Sinus augmentation will add bone to the upper jaw in the area of molars and premolars. The bone is placed between the maxillary sinuses and the jaw on either side of your nose. Sinus augmentation aims to graft sufficient bone material onto the upper jaw to support a dental implant.

  • Gum Graft Surgery

Periodontal diseases cause gum recession and expose the tooth roots. Gum graft surgery will cover the roots and protect them from decay or future periodontal attachment loss. Gum tissues from the palate or other parts of the mouth hide the damaged area.
